Managing Oral Mucositis
Although new treatments and preventive agents for oral mucositis (OM) are
on the horizon, current treatment options are limited.1,2 Researchers
have studied treatment options such as mouth rinses, anti-inflammatory agents
and antimicrobials, but none has been proven wholly effective in managing
OM.3
Therefore, current recommendations for managing OM include comprehensive oral
care — a key component in OM prevention — and palliative
pain management.1,2
Comprehensive oral assessments prior to and during cancer treatment, oral
and dental optimization before and during treatment, proper nutritional care,
and palliative care are important factors in managing OM.1
In this section you’ll find OM Treatment Guidelines, strategies
for Managing Pain, and information on the Latest Developments in
managing OM.
